VANCOUVER - Bo Levi Mitchell carried the Calgary Stampeders to a Grey Cup title Sunday. Mitchell threw for 334 yards as Calgary held on for a thrilling 20-16 win over the Hamilton Tiger-Cats at B.C. Place. The six-foot-two, 196-pound Texan was calm and precise on the field, completing 25-of-34 passes in his first career Grey Cup start. He was named the games outstanding player. At one point, Mitchell threw 10 straight completions, tying him for the third-longest streak in Grey Cup history before a boisterous B.C. Place Stadium gathering of 52,056 — 1,423 short of a sellout. But the West Division champions needed two late defensive stands and some luck to secure the victory. A Delvin Breaux interception of Mitchell put Hamilton at the Calgary 50-yard line. Quarterback Zach Collaros marched the offence to the three-yard line before the Stampeders defence stiffened, resulting in Justin Medlocks 17-yard field goal at 9:25 of the fourth quarter to pull to within 20-13. Hamilton regained possession at its 41-yard line with under four minutes remaining and marched to the Calgary 23. Cory Maces sack stalled the drive and set up Medlocks 37-yard field goal to cut the Stampeders lead to 20-16 with just over two minutes remaining. Brandon Banks brought Ticats supporters to their feet with 35 seconds left when he returned a Rene Paredes punt 90 yards for a TD, but it was nullified by an illegal block penalty. Instead of having the lead, Hamilton took over at its 12-yard line. Calgary earned its third straight win this season over Hamilton, which after a 1-6 start to the season rallied to a 9-9 mark to finish atop the East Division. Paredes had to handle punting duties in the second half after incumbent Rob Maver suffered an abdominal injury after being hammered on a Hamilton punt return. The six-foot, 201-pound Maver was hit from the blindside by Justin Hickman, a six-foot-two, 265-pound defensive lineman, and remained on the field for some time before eventually walking off on his own. Calgary also lost receiver Maurice Price to an ankle injury in the second half. Calgary earned its second Grey Cup win since 08 when John Hufnagel was named head coach/GM. Hamiltons Grey Cup drought continues with their last CFL championship coming in Vancouver in 99 when they beat the Stampeders 32-21. Its also the second straight Grey Cup loss for the Ticats, who lost 45-23 last year in Regina to the Saskatchewan Roughriders. Backup quarterback Drew Tate had two TDs for Calgary. Paredes added the converts and two field goals. Banks scored Hamiltons touchdown. Medlock booted the convert and two field goals. A blocked field goal by Calgarys Demonte Bolden loomed large in Calgary taking a 17-7 halftime lead. The burly defensive lineman, in his first game since breaking his leg in September, batted down Medlocks 26-yard try with the Stampeders leading 14-0. The six-foot-five, 285-pound Bolden began his CFL career in Hamilton, playing two seasons there (09-10) before joining the Stampeders in 2012. Mitchell countered by marching Calgary 87 yards on eight plays, setting up Paredes 11-yard field goal at 12:43. But Collaros countered smartly, hitting Banks on a 45-yard TD pass at 13:39 to make it a 10-point game. Mitchell was a one-man show in the first half, hitting 14-of-17 passes for 220 of Calgarys 232 net yards. Despite Hamiltons terrible start, Collaros completed 9-of-13 attempts for 155 yards and a TD, accounting most of the Ticats 185 first-half offensive yards. It was a dreadful opening quarter for Hamilton, which posted -12 yards rushing and just four net yards. Calgary had 120 net yards, thanks to Mitchells 117 passing yards. Tates one-yard TD run 48 seconds into the second capped a 10-play, 66-yard drive and came after Hamiltons Brandon Stewart was called for pass interference in the end zone. Tate opened the scoring at 9:48 of the first with a one-yard touchdown that ended a five-play, 55-yard march. Members of the Stampeders receive $16,000 for the win while the Ticats earn $8,000 apiece. NOTES — Receiver Joe West and offensive lineman Edwin Harrison didnt dress for Calgary. It did little to stop the Philadelphia Flyers from controlling the present.R.J. Umberger and Matt Read scored 2 minutes apart in the third period and the Flyers continued their road dominance over their in-state rivals with a convincing 5-3 win Wednesday night.Umberger, a Pittsburgh native, beat Marc-Andre Fleury 6:50 into the third to break a tie and Read followed with a backhander to help the Flyers improve to 12-2-1 at Consol Energy Center since the arena opened in 2010.Coming in here tonight and beating a good team on their ice to finish off a road trip, to me that shows a lot of character, Umberger said.Though the game featured two U.S. teams, the sell-out crowd sang O Canada before the opening faceoff to honour a Canadian soldier killed in attack in Ottawa on Wednesday.I thought it was a special tribute tonight, said Penguins coach Mike Johnston, who was born in Nova Scotia and has coached throughout Canada. Certainly when those events happen, they strike everybody.Sean Couturier had a goal and an assist, Mark Streit and Pierre-Edouard Bellemare also scored for the Flyers. Ray Emery stopped 21 shots as Philadelphia rebounded from a 4-0 loss in Chicago on Tuesday night to outplay the well-rested Penguins, playing for the first time in four days.I think we could definitely be sharper, Penguins centre Sidney Crosby said. Whether thats because we havent played a lot of games or we werent focused on executing the right way, It could be either of the two but we definitely werent sharp in a lot of areas.Nick Spaling had a goal and an assist for Pittsburgh. Pascal Dupuis and Marcel Goc also scored for Pittsburgh, but the Penguins were plagued by defensive breakdowns. Marc-Andre Fleury made 28 saves but was consistently put in tough spots as Philadelphia expertly counter-attacked to catch the Penguins out of position.I think it was one of those games where their energy caught fire and ours took a step back, Johnston said.Umberger, who grew up 20 minutes east of the arena, scored his first goal of the seasonn when he blasted a feed from Claude Giroux by Fleury to break a 2-2 tie.dddddddddddd. Reads first tally was considerably easier, tucking a backhander past the sprawled Fleury to give the Flyers a cushion.Goc drew Pittsburgh within a goal when he beat Emery with 2:57 remaining, but Couturier flipped a puck the length of the ice into an empty net with 26 seconds left as the Flyers finished up a 2-1 road trip.I like the way we checked, Flyers coach Craig Berube said. I think in the neutral zone we did a real good job without the puck and took away their speed for the most part. The Penguins unveiled a new third jersey that replicated the uniform worn by the Mario Lemieux-led teams that won consecutive Stanley Cups in 1991 and 1992. The new old duds seemed to give Pittsburgh early energy.Spaling gave the Penguins an early lead with his first goal since being acquired in a draft day trade from Nashville in June, jumping on a rebound and beating Emery over his right shoulder just 3:50 into the game. The score seemed to temporarily deflate the Flyers. Pittsburgh controlled play for an extended stretch at one point, keeping the puck in the Philadelphia zone for the better part of a minute at even strength. The effort drew a standing ovation but no results, as Emery kept Philadelphia in it.The Flyers quickly gathered themselves and eventually countered. Streits slap shot from the point appeared to be deflected by Pittsburghs Evgeni Malkin to tie it and Bellemare, a 29-year-old rookie from France, scored his first NHL goal with a delicate tip-in off a centring pass from Couturier.Dupuis evened it 9 minutes into the second when Paul Martins shot from the point hit him and found its way around Emery but the Flyers controlled the third period to win going away.NOTES: Pittsburghs top-ranked power play went 0 for 2, the first time this season the Penguins have not scored with the man advantage. ...
