There were times on Sunday at the Atlanta Open when John Isner probably wished he had gone to Rio for the Olympics. While the temperature in Rio during Serena Williams 6-4, 6-2 over?Daria Gavrilova?was a pleasant 77 degrees, the?thermometer in Atlantas Atlantic Station seemed on the verge of exploding as the mercury ticked above 90, with the humidity making it feel even hotter. Not as hot as Isners opponent, Nick Kyrgios, though. Isner, the three-time defending champion, staggered and stumbled in the first-set tiebreaker on wobbly legs, looking conspicuously woozy. Although he went through the motions, Isner folded in two tiebreakers. Kyrgios went on to win the title match 7-6 (3), 7-6 (4) .The conditions were tough, Kyrgios said afterward. But its always tough against John. Not as tough as it has sometimes been in the past. Isner seems to have misplaced his talent for winning tiebreakers this year; hes 24-23 in them on the season, a disappointing mark for a player with a humongous serve. But the terms for anyone playing Isner in the U.S. summer are still daunting. It was one of the reasons Isner chose not to travel to Rio. But there were others. While?Roger Federer takes enormous pride in being a citizen of the world, Isner is comparably gratified being a former Georgia Bulldog and citizen of the great state of North Carolina. He enjoys one big sea-to-shining sea advantage among those amber waves of grain.Theres more. For these Olympics, neither the ATP nor the WTA is awarding rankings points. With 250 points from Isners win in Atlanta last year dropping off, and the Olympics being both unpredictable and loaded, his decision might not be noble. But it is understandable.Kyrgios is a different case altogether. Unlike Isner, whos on excellent terms with tennis powers in the U.S., Kyrgios has been engaged in a running battle with the Australian establishment. He pulled out of the Olympic Games (following in the footsteps of fellow malcontent Bernard Tomic) in June, claiming he had been subject to unwarranted attacks and unfair and unjust treatment at the hands of the Australian Olympic Committee. The 21-year-old from Canberra, now ranked No. 18, claimed on his website that he had the backing of Tennis Australia. But Kyrgios charged that the federation had engaged in a month-long campaign of public and private disparagement and pre-empted further controversy by pulling his name from consideration. (Although Kyrgios would have been eligible by ranking, Olympians still must be nominated by their federations, which work closely with the Olympic committee.)All that is backstory. The front story is that both men who bailed on Rio, along with the likes of Sam Querrey, Tomas Berdych, Milos Raonic and others (including some women, led by No. 3 Simona Halep) are either in a position to enhance their rankings or at a potential advantage for the climax of the summer, the US Open. For a nine-day event, the tennis in Rio will exact a heavy toll physically and emotionally. Some of the players will be competing in three events. Olympic tennis players will be welcomed back by the blazing heat of the Cincinnati Masters, a combined mandatory event. A week after Cincy ends, the US Open gets underway. The pros who declined to take part in the Olympics were rewarded with chances to boost their rankings. Theyre also on a more sensible schedule with less emotional stress. And they have a little more wiggle room in their schedules in the weeks ahead. Kyrgios has already felt the benefit of turning down his country. He won just the second title of his career Sunday, added 250 rankings points to his total and pocketed almost $110,000. (The Olympics offers no prize money.)The points will be enough for Kyrgios to change places with the player ranked one rung above him. That happens to be Isner.Maybe the big American should have gone to Rio, after all. Christian Wilkins Womens Jersey .
