No. 20 Navy and its high-powered triple option attack will face a huge test against visiting Temple in the American Athletic Conference championship game on Saturday (Noon ET, ABC).The Midshipmen (9-2, 7-1), who won the West Division of the AAC, are playing for a conference title for the first time in the 136-year history of their program. Navy, led by quarterback Will Worth, is averaging 342 rushing yards per game, second best in the nation behind New Mexico (360.9).Temple, which won the East Division, advanced to the conference championship for the second consecutive season. The Owls (9-3, 7-1) are riding a six game winning streak and have allowed 273.4 yards per game, ranked third behind Alabama and Michigan. The winner of this game will be in the hunt for the Group of Five bid to a New Years Six bowl. Its a great offense and theyve done a terrific job of wearing teams down and winning the war of attrition, Temple coach Matt Rhule said about the Midshipmen. Thats something we pride ourselves on. Its not often that we play other teams that run, run, run and pound people until they submit, but thats what Navy has done.Worth has put together one of the finest seasons of any Navy football player. He was thrust into the starting role when Tago Smith went down with a season-ending knee injury in the opener against Fordham. From there, Worth has seamlessly run the triple option, managing 2,544 yards of total offense -- 1,181 rushing and 1,363 passing. He has also scored a touchdown in 11 consecutive games, which is the longest active streak in college football.Still, Worths focus has been fully on winning the AAC title, rather than personal stats. Navy spent 134 seasons as an independent before joining the AAC last year. This is exactly where we wanted to be, Worth said. The entire offseason, this is what we worked for. We feel great, just got to keep things rolling right now.Worth will face a tough challenge from an aggressive Temple defense led by defensive linemen Haason Reddick and Praise Martin-Oguike, who have dominated opponents throughout the season. Reddick has registered 21.5 tackles for a loss, while Oguike has seven sacks. The Owls secondary is equally adept, allowing just 145.8 passing yards per game -- second best in the nation behind only Michigan. It is going to be a tough, hard-nosed football game, Navy coach Ken Niumatalolo said. I dont think any of us expect anything different during a conference championship game.Temple quarterback Phillip Walker has also played a vital role over the teams six-game winning streak. Walker had thrown for 2,700 passing yards, third all-time among Owls quarterbacks for a single season, with 18 touchdowns. He could find some space against a Navy defense that is allowing 264.9 passing yards per game.Walker is complemented by running backs Jahad Thomas and Ryquell Armstead, who have combined for 31 touchdowns this season. The Owls have come a long way since opening the season 1-3. However, they never quit believing in themselves and their confidence is riding high.Nobody believed we were going to win this championship at the beginning of the year, but we did though, Walker said. We lost our first game and then lost our third game and our goal was still right in front of us. We won the east side now, we just have to get prepared for next week.Navy leads the all-time series against Temple, 6-5, including a 31-24 victory in the last meeting at Lincoln Financial Field in 2014.The Midshipmen have one key advantage in hosting the championship game at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium, where they are tied with Houston for the nations longest active home winning streak. Navy has not lost in Annapolis since a 36-27 setback to Western Kentucky onSept. 27, 2014.Its really exciting for our program to have the championship game here in a venue where weve had a lot of success, Niumatalolo said. Were going to need all our fans to come and cheer and support and be loud for us. Were going to need every edge and advantage we can get. Hopefully, playing at home will be a benefit for us. MIAMI -- Whatever the Detroit Pistons decide to do when it comes to protests that call for societal change this season, theyll have the support of coach Stan Van Gundy.Hes urging them to make an impact. As NBA teams began gathering Friday to start training camps -- three teams hold their first practices Saturday, while 27 others get going in the coming days -- an issue each is addressing is how players and coaches can help create substantive change in cities across the country. The NBA and the players union urged teams this week to develop ideas in a memo this week.No one can be happy with whats going on right now, Van Gundy said Friday. I like what (Golden State coach) Steve Kerr said. Wherever you are on the political spectrum, I dont think a thinking person can say, `This isnt a problem. I mean, were shooting unarmed people -- and youve got to think largely, they are seen as threats largely because of their race. I mean, its hard to fathom.Similar sentiments have been expressed around the league for months, as the list of U.S. cities dealing with protests -including Baltimore, Milwaukee, Chicago, New York, Ferguson, Missouri and now Tulsa, Oklahoma and Charlotte -- over the death of black men at the hands of police.Dwyane Wade, LeBron James, Carmelo Anthony and Chris Paul talked openly about it in July, standing side-by-side on television. At media days Friday in Oklahoma City, Houston and New Orleans, it was a major topic. Around the rest of the league, itll be the same Monday. In a league where about 75 percent of the players are black and some have enormous social-media followings, plenty of eyes will be on the NBA to see what it does after NFL players and some athletes from other sports have taken to kneeling during national anthems or raising a fist in an effort to spark discussion about race relations and other matters. Were not looking forward to protesting stuff, New Orleans Quincy Pondexter said. Were looking forward to solutions. The NBA has a rule saying players and staff must stand for the playing of the national anthem, and 20 years ago Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf was suspended for a game for refusing to stand for the anthem. Abdul-Rauf, who did not respond to interview requests this week, said then that he felt the flag was a symbol of oppression.Despite that rule, which the NBA did not mention in its memo to teams, Houstons James Harden saiid protests on NBA courts are possible.ddddddddddddhe Rockets All-Star called the decision by San Francisco 49ers quarterback Colin Kaepernick to kneel or sit during the anthem a powerful statement.Hes standing up for what he believes in, Harden said. Devastating that all these people are just dying, dying for no reason. Families are grieving, just a tough situation, especially from men and women who are supposed to be protecting us. But each individual has their own beliefs on how they go about handling it and youve got to respect it.Harden said Rockets players will decide what to do individually. New Orleans coach Alvin Gentry wants the Pelicans to have a unified approach, a stance echoed by New York Knicks President Phil Jackson. We want them to do something that they all feel genuine about, Jackson said.New Orleans center Anthony Davis said seeing frustration and violence in recent months has prompted him to become even more community-minded, with hopes that actions go deeper than any words could. We have the power to do stuff other people cant, Davis said. So I think we have to use that. For Van Gundy, it goes much deeper than just reacting to shootings. He spoke at length about urging the Pistons to vote and how the organization responded to a water crisis in Flint, Michigan. He also talked about how Pistons forward Marcus Morris had a 6-year-old cousin injured by gunfire this summer; the boy survived, even though the vehicle he was in was caught in a flurry of crossfire.Issues like those are why Van Gundy said the question of whether NBA players will kneel for the anthem is far less important than many might suggest.Theres so much to focus on, Van Gundy said. And I think its great that we have players that want to be part of that conversation, and a lot of players that want to go beyond the conversation and be part of the solution.Finding that solution wont be easy.I dont have an answer. Nobody has an answer, Oklahoma Citys Russell Westbrook said. If that was the case, we would have fixed it.---AP Basketball Writer Brian Mahoney in New York and AP Sports Writers Noah Trister in Auburn Hills, Michigan, Kristie Rieken in Houston, Cliff Brunt in Oklahoma City and Brett Martel in New Orleans contributed to this report.
