SAN FRANCISCO -- Matt Moore hasnt been the elixir for the San Francisco Giants second-half struggles.Gregory Polanco had a homer and four RBI, Ryan Vogelsong won in his return to AT&T Park and the Pittsburgh Pirates beat Moore and the Giants 8-5 on Monday night. The left-handed Moore (0-2) allowed five runs over six innings and is still seeking his first victory since being acquired prior to the Aug. 1 trade deadline from Tampa Bay.Im capable of better things than what happened tonight, said Moore, who was 7-7 with a 4.08 ERA with the Rays. The big blow came in the top of the sixth. Moore walked Jung Ho Kang with two outs and nobody on, and then Gregory Polanco hit a two-run homer on a first-pitch fastball. The location was a bad miss, Moore said. It wound up staying over the middle of the plate, it was supposed to be more on the outside corner, more of a chase pitch actually, and (Polanco) was aggressive and he got it.That was the biggest mistake of the night, he added.Denard Span had three hits, including a home run, and Eduardo Nunez also homered for the Giants.Andrew McCutchen had two hits and two RBI and made a spectacular diving, backhanded catch in the eighth to rob Nunez of a hit with two runners in scoring position. In the beginning Im thinking he cant get the ball, Nunez said. You have to give some credit to McCutchen, thats why hes one of the best, because he can make the catch that not a lot of guys can make in that situation.San Francisco remains in first place in the NL West, a half-game ahead of the idle Dodgers.Vogelsong (2-2), who spent parts of seven seasons with the Giants and won two World Series, allowed four runs over 5 2/3 innings. He walked three and struck out one.An All-Star with San Francisco in 2011, Vogelsong was greeted with an extended ovation when he took the mound in the first inning, and a video montage of his time with the Giants played on the scoreboard as he warmed. When he left after allowing Spans home run in the sixth, Vogelsong paused on his way to the dugout and tipped his cap to the crowd. There are moments in these games that you want to hold on to and remember for the rest of your life. Tonight was one of those for me, Vogelsong said. It was amazing.Polanco hit a two-run double off Moore in the fourth, then drove in two more runs with his 17th home run in the sixth.Francisco Cervelli singled, walked twice and made a sparkling defensive play to tag out a runner at home to help Vogelsong win for the first time since coming off the 60-day DL after being hit in the face with a pitch on May 23.Tony Watson, the fourth Pirates reliever, retired three batters for his sixth save.Vogelsong got off to a rough start when he walked Joe Panik with the bases loaded in the first inning, then gave up an RBI single to Hunter Pence in the third.San Francisco missed a chance to add on when Pence overran third base on Nunezs double and was thrown out while scrambling back to the bag.DOWN ... AND OUTPence made a spectacular defensive play when he caught Josh Harrisons foul ball while on his back after stumbling on the mound in the visiting teams bullpen.TRAINERS ROOMPirates: Starling Marte was back in the lineup after sitting Sunday with a sore upper back.Giants: Buster Posey sat for the second straight game due to tightness in his lower back. Posey has been bothered by the issue since the teams flight back from Miami on Sunday.UP NEXTPirates: Jameson Taillon (3-2) faces the Giants for the first time in his career Tuesday night. The right-hander has allowed one earned run over his previous 14 innings.Giants: RHP Jeff Samardzija (10-8) makes his second start against Pittsburgh this season. Magic Johnson watches NBA games every day, amazed by the way?Russell Westbrook?is compiling triple-doubles even faster than he could. Now Johnson is ready to start talking about it on the air again. The Hall of Famer is returning to ESPN as analyst to work on the networks NBA Countdown studio show, ESPN announced Monday.Johnson will debut on the pregame studio show for ABCs Christmas coverage and then join Michael Wilbon, who is also making his return to the show, and Sage Steele on the Saturday night team, beginning Jan. 21.Im so excited to be working with my ESPN family again on NBA Countdown Saturday nights, Johnson said in a statement released by ESPN. Michael, Sage and I are going to have a lot of fun this season while we cover the greatest sport in the world. Basketball has been so good to me, and I cant wait to once again share my love and passion for the game with the fans and my ESPN colleagues.Johnson worked for ESPN as a studio analyst from 2008-13 and said getting to work again with Wilbon was one of the reasons for his return, along with the chance to work the limited nine-game Saturday schedule. He was previously doing 60 or more nights, which was too much with his other businesses, he said.If it had been a full schedule like I did before, 60-something games, it never would have worked out, Johnson said. I wouldnt have come back. This is the second season of NBA Saturday Primetime on ABC, which had one of the most memorable regular-season games of last season, when tthe?Golden State Warriors stormed back to beat the Oklahoma City Thunder?after MVP?Stephen Curry?hit a long 3-pointer in overtime.ddddddddddddNow Johnson thinks the Thunders Westbrook is on track to unseat Curry. The reigning Western Conference player of the week entered play on Monday with five straight triple-doubles -- the most since?Michael Jordan?had seven in a row in 1989 -- and Westbrook was averaging 31.0 points, 11.3 assists and 10.8 rebounds for the season. You think about it, and not just getting triple-doubles, but he gets high triple-doubles with his scoring, rebounds and assists, said Johnson, who is second in NBA history with 138 triple-doubles.So what hes doing and the rate hes doing it at, as well, its just truly amazing; and if anybody could average a triple-double for a season, I think he could definitely pull it off. So its got the whole league and all basketball fans around the country paying notice to him.The NBA Countdown pregame show will run for 30 minutes beginning at 8 p.m. ET. The Saturday night schedule begins with the?San Antonio Spurs visiting the Cleveland Cavaliers, then has the LA Clippers?visiting the Warriors on Jan. 28, putting the Wests top three teams in action in the first two weeks. Its an exciting season and I wanted to be a part of it, Johnson said.Information from The Associated Press was used in this report.
